Gateway National Recreation Area
urban design landscape graphic design 1
As an area which serves both local and global needs, GATEWAY strengthens new urban ecologies.  Waste, water contamination, and pollution lead to an approach to ecology that uses urban infrastructure as a catalyst for creating and preserving parkland.  These landfill extensions of the existing coastline appear at first as a sign of urban intrusion, but will serve to preserve the wild ecosystems.

Passive preservation is no longer an option, preservation must be ACTIVE.

The wild reclaims the concrete runways as the path of least resistance leads to a constantly evolving habitat.  Within, eco-zones are designated, representing and preserving the diverse landscapes and species of the area.  Marshes, grasslands, and turtle sanctuaries co-exist amonst grass ball fields and clay tennis courts, each a well-used ecology of this uniquely urban park and wetland.

Sanitation facilities extend to a waterfront Waste To Energy (WTE) plant that filters and burns trash which is landfilled off the GATEWAY coast.  The Environmental Study Center gains a new visitor center with bridges to satellite eco-zones.  A landfill island at the Historic Aircraft Museum facilitates an outdoor plane viewing platform.
